This biography of Prof. Drs. Sutiman Bambang Sumitro, B.Sc., S.U., D.Sc. outlines his life journey, thoughts, and their implementation in society. He was an academic at Universitas Brawijaya (UB), particularly in the Department of Biology, and was widely known not only among his students but also in broader communities. His works extended beyond scientific writings—such as research reports, books, and journal articles—to include broader thoughts with practical applications that resonated with the general public. Many of his ideas were eventually appreciated by a wide audience, although at the time they were first introduced, they were often criticized or even rejected.

As part of his continuous effort to foster meaningful contributions, he encouraged his students to undergo a paradigm shift—moving from rigid academic assumptions to the formation of thoughtful logic. For him, scientific thinking was not an absolute dogma, but a mutually agreed truth that must always be open to questioning. This transformation was not instantaneous, but rather the result of a long, challenging intellectual journey. Furthermore, he developed a critical perspective on how scientific conclusions often collided with technologies that failed to solve problems, instead causing harm and confusion to the public. Some of his frameworks were considered contradictory, especially when translated into policy, which sometimes resulted in more harm than benefit.

This book was written by many contributors. The idea for the biography partly stemmed from his postgraduate supervision and was coordinated and written by a group of UB alumni, along with several of his colleagues and friends.
