IMI Publishes the Inaugural Edition of the SYNAPSE magazine as a Platform for Clinical Documentation and Science Communication

Yayasan Inovasi Molekuler Indonesia (IMI) has published SYNAPSE, Edition 1, Volume 1, 2025. Carrying the theme “Real Science for Experimental Healthy Practice Applications,” the publication serves as an internal clinical magazine of IMI–RAHO Club, bringing together clinical experience documentation, scientific discussions, and updates on research and organizational activities. The publication of SYNAPSE is part of IMI’s effort to establish a communication platform connecting researchers, physicians, academics, and the public. Through this publication, clinical observations and scientific ideas are not merely retained as internal records but are systematically organized to support learning, discussion, and further research development.

Documenting the Clinical Experiences of IMI Research Physicians

One of the main sections in the inaugural edition of SYNAPSE is Case Reports by IMI Research Physicians. This section contains nine case reports discussing the use of nanobubble- and gasotransmitter-based approaches in various health conditions.

The topics presented include advanced chronic kidney disease, post-kidney transplantation conditions, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, post-stroke hemiparesis, and recurrent acute ischemic stroke. Each report follows a scientific structure comprising background, case presentation, discussion, conclusion, and references. Through this documentation, IMI research physicians record the clinical and laboratory changes observed during patient care. The reports also consistently emphasize that findings from individual cases cannot be generalized to all patients. Further studies using controlled designs, larger sample sizes, and comprehensive safety and effectiveness evaluations remain necessary.

Explaining Nanobubbles in More Accessible Language

In addition to case reports, SYNAPSE features a Scientific Insight section that explains several scientific concepts in language that is easier for readers to understand.

Topics discussed include why oxygen and hydrogen are being studied in nanobubble form, the concept of reverse aging, and the phenomenon of hormesis, which describes how a substance may produce different biological responses depending on the dose. This section helps explain the relationship between nanobubble size, gas stability in liquids, gas delivery to tissues, redox balance, mitochondrial function, and the body’s adaptive responses. The material is intended as a scientific introduction and not as a substitute for medical consultation, diagnosis, or treatment.

Presenting a Scientist’s Perspective and Personal Experience

In the What Do They Say? section, SYNAPSE features an interview with Prof. Sutiman Bambang Sumitro, S.U., D.Sc., Advisor to IMI. In the interview, Prof. Sutiman shares his personal experience with nanobubble therapy and his views on quality of life, homeostasis, hormesis, and the development of the Intelligent Gas Delivery System (IGDS). The discussion presents nanobubble technology not merely as a technical matter, but as part of a broader field of study connecting biology, physics, chemistry, medicine, and translational approaches. The personal experience presented should still be understood as an individual testimony and cannot be considered general evidence of clinical effectiveness.

Recording the Development of IMI’s Research and Networks

SYNAPSE also documents several important IMI activities throughout 2025. One of these was the participation of an IMI delegation in the International Conference on Hydrogen Medicine & Biology at Juntendo University in Tokyo, Japan. At the forum, IMI presented research on the stability of oxyhydrogen and hydrogen nanobubbles under various temperature and pH conditions.

This edition also includes a report on the 2025 IMI–RAHO Club Doctors’ Gathering, which brought together physicians, researchers, and network members to discuss case reports, research proposals, gasotransmitters, hormesis, and the development of nano-technology-based health services. The institutional transformation from Institut Molekul Indonesia to Yayasan Inovasi Molekuler Indonesia is also highlighted. This transformation marks the strengthening of IMI’s position as an institution engaged in molecular research, nanobubbles, gasotransmitters, and health innovation through multidisciplinary collaboration.

Promoting a Culture of Documentation and Scientific Integrity

In his opening remarks, IMI Chairman Prof. Akhmad Sabarudin, M.Sc., Dr.Sc., expressed the hope that SYNAPSE would become a platform for scientific dialogue and a bridge of knowledge between the research community and the wider public. IMI places scientific integrity, rigorous methodology, transparency, research ethics, and interdisciplinary collaboration at the foundation of innovation development.

A similar message was conveyed by the Head of IMI Clinical Research, dr. Subagjo, Sp.B, Sp.BTKV, Subsp.VE(K), FIATCVS. The documentation of case reports is regarded as an initial step in building a scientific foundation, but it must be followed by literature reviews, preclinical studies, phased clinical trials, and compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements. Through SYNAPSE, IMI hopes that clinical experiences can be documented in a more structured manner, research developments can be communicated responsibly, and collaboration among physicians, researchers, academics, and the public can continue to be strengthened.
